BEST OF MOVIE MACHINE 2014 (part 1)
Part 1 of The Best of Movie Machine 2014, featuring: Shooting with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera; Atomos introduce the Ninja Star & Shogun; Blackmagic URSA; AJA CION; Digital Bolex; Quality LED lighting vs Cheap LED lighting.
2014 has been a fantastic year in the digital video and digital cinema scene. We’ve seen a surge towards 4K, with plenty of choice in the HD world still on offer. We’re at that wonderful moment in technology where there is tremendous choice at all levels of production, and some staggering inexpensive cameras and post production systems, making affordable production better than ever.
January: Shooting with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera (part 1)

Movie Machine kicked off 2014 with a 3 part review of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. This little marvel shoots CinemaDNG RAW or ProRes, and produces extremely high quality images (provided you use good quality glass!)

February: Filmed with many different cameras… guess which camera filmed which shots

I put this together for fun to see how the footage from a bunch of different cameras would cut together. I was surprised to see some, not so expensive cameras, performed admirably next to some of the more high-end models.

Check out the results of which camera filmed which shots (below).

March: Quality LED lighting vs Cheap LED lighting

Producer/Director Matt Davis compares some cheap LED lights with the full spectrum Felloni LED lights. It is well-known in cinematography circles that not all LED lights are the same! Some have a green tinge; others flicker when dimmed or brightened. Here we see the difference.
April: Affordable 4K: Shooting with the BM Production Camera

On location with the Blackmagic 4K Production Camera, shooting in a variety of situations, testing out this camera to see just what it is really capable of. The Blackmagic Production Camera represents an affordable way into the world of 4K, also shoots HD, and offers RAW recording.
NAB 2015

NAB 2015 brought some mighty, exciting announcement. Here’s 3 of the best from NAB:

NAB 2015

(Above) AJA CION: 4K, ULTRA HD, 2K, HD PROFESSIONAL CAMERA
May: Digital Bolex D16 Cinema Camera

This camera featues a Super 16mm sized CCD sensor with a global shutter and 12 stops of dynamic range. The D16 records in 12-bit CinemaDNG RAW; has XLR inputs with. 24-bit 96 kHz audio without need for external recording devices.
That’s the first half of 2014. Standby the Part 2 which is just as exciting as the first 1/2 of the year. With IBC and the fallout from NAB upon us – 2014 has proven to be a year of change for high quality acquisition and post production.
